HOW TO: Getting started with Silverlight 3

Silverlight 3 is released. Once again, same questions appear: What tools and software do I need to start building Silverlight 3 solutions and experiences? Where to get all those tools and how to get started? In this short guide I am sharing with you all the resources you need to help you and get you started with Silverlight 3.
How to get started with Silverlight 3?
- 1. You will need Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP SP3, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2003 or any Windows web hosting plans.
- 2. You will need latest Silverlight 3 plugin. You can download Silverlight 3 from this link.
- 3. For best development / designer experience (Expression Blend requires this) you should get .NET Framework 3.5 with Service Pack 1
- 4. You will need Visual Studio 2008 (with Service Pack 1) for rich development experience.
- 5. For rich design experience you should get Expression Studio 3 (at least you will need Expression Blend 3).
- 6. If you want to develop Silverlight 3 solutions with Visual Studio 2008 SP 1, then you need to obtain Silverlight 3 Tools for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. This add-on will update Visual Studio 2008 SP1 or Visual Web Developer Express. With this update you will get Silverlight project templates, developer runtime and, as it is usual, SDK (software development kit with samples and documentation).
- 7. For Deep Zoom solutions built with Silverlight you should install Deep Zoom Composer.
- 8. For further development and customization, you can get Silverlight Toolkit (obviously, for Silverlight apps) or WPF “toolkit” (I let you figure for what kind of apps is that used).
- 9. You can also take a look at Silverlight 3 SDK documentation (in help / CHM format). Very useful in my opinion!
